BEFORE THE HEADLINES, THERE WAS A KID FROM BROCKTON

There aren't many artists from Massachusetts who became a national conversation before they were old enough to drive.

Lil Poopy did.

Long before podcasts debated hip-hop every morning, before TikTok clips turned every opinion into a trend, a kid from Brockton found himself at the center of one of rap's biggest discussions. Some people saw unbelievable potential. Others saw controversy. Parents argued about him. Hip-hop blogs couldn't stop posting him. Television cameras followed him. Even people who had never heard of Brockton suddenly knew the name Lil Poopy.

Very few artists ever experience that.

Even fewer experience it before they become teenagers.

Whether you agreed with the way his career started or not, one thing is impossible to deny.

Lil Poopy became one of the most talked-about young rappers in America.

BROCKTON WAS HOME

Before the headlines...

Before the television cameras...

Before the controversy...

Lil Poopy was simply Luis Rivera Jr., a kid growing up in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Brockton has always produced fighters.

Champions.

Competitors.

People who know what it feels like to have to earn respect.

Music has always been part of that culture too.

The city has produced artists, producers, DJs and entertainers for decades, but when Lil Poopy appeared, nobody expected a child to become the face of one of hip-hop's biggest national conversations.

That's exactly what happened.

THE INTERNET DIDN'T WAIT

Most artists slowly introduce themselves to the world.

Lil Poopy never got that chance.

His early music videos exploded across YouTube, Facebook and hip-hop blogs almost overnight.

People weren't just talking about the music.

They were talking about everything.

His age.

His lyrics.

His image.

The adults around him.

Every new video brought another wave of opinions.

Some believed they were watching a future superstar.

Others believed he was growing up far too quickly.

The discussion became so large that child welfare officials became involved after concerns were raised publicly about the content surrounding such a young performer.

Suddenly...

A kid from Brockton wasn't just making music anymore.

He had become national news.

THE COKE BOYS ERA

Around that same time, Lil Poopy's name became closely connected with French Montana's Coke Boys movement.

For a young rapper from Massachusetts, simply being around one of the hottest brands in hip-hop was enough to attract attention.

Pictures circulated.

Videos spread online.

His name became connected to one of rap's biggest movements at the time.

Years later, French Montana clarified that Lil Poopy was never officially signed to Coke Boys, something many fans misunderstood for years.

But perception matters in hip-hop.

Whether official or unofficial, that connection introduced Lil Poopy to an audience far bigger than Massachusetts.

It also proved something.

People were paying attention.

WORLDSTAR HELPED MAKE HIM A HOUSEHOLD NAME

Back then, getting posted on WorldStarHipHop meant something.

Before Instagram Reels...

Before TikTok...

Before everybody had a podcast...

WorldStar was where people discovered new artists.

Lil Poopy's videos circulated heavily across the platform, putting him in front of millions of viewers who had never heard of Brockton before.

For better or worse, his name became impossible to ignore.

People debated him every day.

Some laughed.

Some criticized.

Some defended him.

Everybody watched.

THE RAP GAME CHANGED THE CONVERSATION

By the time Lil Poopy appeared on Lifetime's The Rap Game, he was already famous.

Now he had an opportunity to prove there was more to him than controversy.

Created by Jermaine Dupri and executive produced with Queen Latifah, The Rap Game became one of the biggest launching pads for young rappers anywhere in the country.

Contestants weren't simply making television.

They were learning the business.

Working with professionals.

Competing every week under pressure.

Lil Poopy competed alongside artists including Miss Mulatto, now known worldwide as Latto, as well as Young Lyric, Supa Peach, and Lil Niqo.

Looking back, that first season feels historic.

Latto would go on to become one of hip-hop's biggest stars, earning platinum records, Grammy nominations and multiple BET Awards.

Young Lyric built one of the strongest independent followings among the cast.

Supa Peach developed a massive social media audience.

Even years later, fans still talk about that original cast because of the talent it produced.

For Brockton, seeing Lil Poopy standing beside those artists on national television mattered.

It reminded people that talent from Massachusetts belonged on those stages too.

THE MAJOR LABEL OPPORTUNITY

Following his television run, reports surfaced that Lil Poopy signed a deal connected to Epic Records/Sony.

That represented another major milestone.

For a young artist from Brockton, opportunities like that don't happen often.

The industry still believed there was something special there.

People saw charisma.

Confidence.

Natural star power.

The question was never whether Lil Poopy could get attention.

The question became whether he could continue growing as an artist while growing up in front of the public.

MUSIC WAS NEVER THE ONLY STORY

One of the hardest parts of Lil Poopy's career had nothing to do with music.

His father, Luis Rivera Sr., became part of the public conversation from the very beginning, defending his son while also facing criticism over the direction of Lil Poopy's career.

Then another chapter unfolded.

Rivera Sr. was later arrested as part of a federal drug investigation involving an alleged cocaine distribution conspiracy.

For Lil Poopy, that meant dealing with something no young artist should have to carry.

While trying to build a music career, he was also watching family matters become national headlines.

It's impossible to separate that from his story.

Because life doesn't separate those things either.

GROWING UP IN PUBLIC

Most people get the chance to make mistakes without the entire internet watching.

Lil Poopy never had that luxury.

Every move...

Every interview...

Every song...

Every appearance...

People had an opinion.

That's a difficult way to grow up.

Child stars rarely have easy transitions into adulthood.

Some disappear.

Some reinvent themselves.

Some spend years trying to escape the version of themselves the public refuses to let go.

Lil Poopy has faced that challenge from the very beginning.

BROCKTON NEVER STOPPED CLAIMING HIM

No matter how many headlines came and went...

No matter how many blogs wrote about him...

No matter how many debates surrounded his career...

One thing never changed.

He was Brockton's kid.

The city watched him grow.

The city celebrated the opportunities.

The city felt the criticism.

The city understood that behind every viral clip was still a young person trying to find his place.

That's something outsiders often forget.

WHY HIS STORY STILL MATTERS

Lil Poopy's story isn't really about controversy.

It's about growing up.

It's about what happens when a child becomes famous before he understands what fame really is.

It's about how quickly the internet builds people up and tears them down.

It's about Brockton producing another artist who refused to be ignored.

Whether people first discovered him through WorldStar...

The Coke Boys connection...

The Rap Game...

Jermaine Dupri...

Or the countless debates surrounding his early career...

They discovered him.

And that's something very few artists from Massachusetts can say.

THE NEXT CHAPTER BELONGS TO HIM

History will always remember Lil Poopy as one of the most recognizable child rappers of his generation.

That's already written.

What's still being written is everything that comes next.

The kid from Brockton who had America talking has become a man with the chance to tell his story on his own terms.

No controversy.

No headlines.

No distractions.

Just the music.

Sometimes that's the hardest transition an artist can make.

But if there's one thing Lil Poopy has already proven, it's this:

People have been counting him out since he was a kid.

He's spent his entire life giving them another reason to watch.
