Lil Rennie: Worcester’s Young Voice Is Built Different

Massachusetts hip-hop has always had hunger in its bones. From basement studios to city stages, from street-corner cyphers to festival lights, the state keeps producing artists with something to prove. Out of Worcester, one name is starting to feel louder every year: Lil Rennie.

Born Serenity Jackson, Lil Rennie is more than a young rapper chasing a moment. She is Worcester-raised, city-shaped, and already carrying herself like an artist with a mission. Her story is rooted in performance, poetry, family, and a hometown that has watched her grow from a kid with a dream into one of Central Massachusetts’ most exciting rising voices.

Lil Rennie started creating early. Public profiles note that she began making music as a child, with The Pulse Magazine reporting that she started making music at 5 years old and began performing original hip-hop songs around age 6. That matters, because you can hear it in her presence. She does not move like somebody trying rap on for size. She moves like somebody who has been building muscle memory with a mic in her hand.

Her roots are Worcester all the way. She served as Worcester Youth Poet Laureate from 2024 to 2025, using her voice not only for music but for community, poetry, and representation. The City of Worcester describes her as a rapper and performer who has appeared at festivals, public events, and a feature showcase at New York’s Apollo Theater.

That Apollo stage is not light work. For a young Massachusetts artist, touching that kind of historic platform says a lot. Lil Rennie has also been connected to major local moments like JoynerFest 2024, where she was listed as an opener, and her own bio highlights that she has performed at the Apollo Theater in New York.

Awards are already stacking up. In 2024, Lil Rennie won Best Rap/Hip-Hop and People’s Choice at the Worcester Music Awards. In 2025, The Pulse Magazine reported that she won Best Rap/Hip Hop Act, Best Solo Act, and The People’s Choice Award, while also being nominated for Best Live Performance. The City of Worcester also credits her as a three-time Worcester Music Awards winner across Best Rapper, Best Solo Act, and The People’s Choice Award.

Musically, Lil Rennie is building a catalog with real range. Her 2024 project The Come Up includes records like “Currency,” “Like What,” “Act Up,” “A Leader,” “Sneaker Junkie,” and the title track “The Come Up.” Her top songs across streaming platforms include “Everybody Mad,” “Make It Hurt,” “Currency,” “Like What,” “Pinky Promise,” and “Hate on Me.”

The features show she is already moving beyond a local bubble. “Pinky Promise” features 24hrs, while “Die Young” features SLAM Jackson. She also appears on “Hate on Me” by Slam Jackson and the 2025 “Halloween Cypher” with Raff Theruler and Tj Soares.

What makes Lil Rennie special is the balance. She has the confidence of a rapper, the discipline of a performer, and the pen of a poet. In Worcester Cultural Coalition’s feature on the city’s poet laureates, she explained that rapping lets her ride the beat, rhythm, lyrics, and movement, while poetry lets her create a more intimate moment with the audience. That dual identity gives her something a lot of young artists do not have yet: depth.

And the influence is clear. Lil Rennie has named Worcester’s own Joyner Lucas as an inspiration, especially his writing and storytelling approach. That connection feels natural. Like Joyner, she is coming from a city that does not always get the national spotlight it deserves — but when Worcester artists break through, they tend to bring the whole city with them.

Lil Rennie represents the next wave of Massachusetts hip-hop: young, fearless, community-rooted, and already decorated. She is not just another artist uploading songs. She is performing on respected stages, winning awards, collaborating, building a fanbase, and turning her hometown story into fuel.

Worcester gave her the foundation. The mic gave her the outlet. Now Lil Rennie is giving Massachusetts a reason to pay attention.

Future star? Absolutely. But more than that — Lil Rennie looks like the kind of artist who is going to grow in public, keep sharpening her pen, and make the city proud every step of the way.
